Mumbai

September 18, 2017 Monday

The flight was not long, we got to Mumbai just before dark.

Our first glimpses of Mumbai.

Nighttime street in Mumbai

After checking in and getting to our room, in the Trident Mumbai, we went down to the hotel restaurant. India Jones. It was  Pan Asian. The restaurant was not crowded,  it was if we had our own personal waiter.   We had the pleasure of dining with Helena

I am still not sure how they did the pudding on a stick, but it was fabulous for dessert!

an art installation that spans two stories!

Sunrise in Mumbai

Mark's breakfast! No big dosas here

The Promenade

People do not go to the beach to sunbathe or go into the water. they walk or have picnics.

This is the Grandparents Park.   Young people are not allowed.

Pictures of along our bus ride of the city

We went to a lovely garden in the heart of the city

Topiary!

Butterfly bush!

There were so many butterflies flitting around

I just missed the bird drinking from the spigot!

wild peacock

We did not stop to tour this Jane area.  The Janes believe that the dead are left out in the open to do what it is they do.  As you can guess in cities it is not widely liked

Such a lush spot in the city

The central laundry

Most of the city's laundry that is sent out is done here

the place is huge. but all outdoors

The crap vendors were getting aggressive

more street scenes

Cows, even in Mumbai!

Gandhi's house.  It was very crowded, with lots of stairs. I sat outside with the school children who were practicing their play. Scenes from the life of Gandhi.

Victoria Station. I was still not feeling well so I elected to stay on the bus. Mark will have better photos.

information bit:
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) formerly known as Victoria Terminus is a historic railway station and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India which serves as the headquarters of the Central Railways. The station has been designed by Frederick William Stevens according to the concept of Victorian Italianate Gothic Revival architecture and meant to be a similar revival of Indian Goth (classical era) architecture. The station was built in 1887 in the Bori Bunder area of Mumbai to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria. The new railway station has been built where the Bori Bunder railway station[once stood. It is one of the busiest railway stations in India, serving as a terminal for both long-distance trains and commuter trains. The station's name was changed from Victoria Terminus (with code BB) to Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (with code CSTM) in March 1996 in honour of Emperor Chhatrapati Shivaji, founder of the Maratha Empire. In 2017, the station was again renamed Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (with code CSMT).

a wonderful mural

Lunch at an Afghani restaurant. I loved it!
